The Art of Ceremonial Tattoos: A Wee Dive into History, Modern Vibes and What I Can Offer You

I've been tattooing for 18 years now, and I've seen lots of trends come and go, and some even coming round again (hello tribal back pieces!)

A lot of my clients choose their designs just because they like them. And that is a perfect reason.

For many though, they are a more than just a cool bit of ink on skin; they’re important stories that folk carry with them.

Tattoos have been around forever, and ceremonial tattoos are most likely how they began. They’ve got a rich history that stretches back thousands of years, with all sorts of cultures putting their own spin on things. From the indigenous Pictish tribes of Scotland, to folk in Africa and the Americas, these tattoos often served as rites of passage, symbols of bravery and a way to show off a bit, or marks to show you belong to a certain group.

For example, Polynesian tattoos, known as “tā moko,” are like a family tree etched onto their skin. Getting one was is big deal, requiring a skilled artist who knows how to weave stories into the designs. (Obviously, these have been replicated all over without knowing the significance, but prob less these days now we are aware of cultural appropriation)

The Maori in New Zealand use tattoos to tell tales of ancestry and personal achievements.

Native American tribes used ceremonial tattoos to show off tribal identity, hunting skills, or to mark significant life changes, often featuring elements of nature, animals, and spiritual symbols.

All around the world tattoos involved rituals that connected folk with their heritage, ancestors, and the spiritual world. Getting a tattoo was seen as a transformative experience, a rite of passage or a rebirth.

Fast forward to today, and the game has changed a bit, but the essence remains. More and more folk are getting tattoos not just for their aesthetics but for the personal stories they tell.

In our modern world, big life events like births, deaths and weddings often lead folk to commemorate these moments with a tattoo.

Moving on from a significant event can be a pointient time to get a tattoo; reclaiming your life from trauma, healing from an illness, or taking a chance to change your life.

Ceremonial tattoos are a way for folk to heal and reclaim their stories. Many choose to get one after tough times, turning pain into art. It’s a beautiful way to show resilience and celebrate survival. Plus, who doesn’t love a good comeback story?

Now, here’s where things get exciting. Imagine celebrating a pivotal moment in your life with a tattoo that embodies your journey, strength, and unique experience.
